ER Nurse Salary in 2026: Emergency RN Pay by State, Trauma Level, and Certification

Emergency department RNs are among the most in-demand nursing specialists in the US, with salaries ranging from $77,000-$139,000 annually based on state, trauma center designation, shift, and certification. The 2026 ER nursing job market is characterized by persistent staffing shortages at community EDs (driven by RN-to-physician ratio imbalances and boarding), creating strong negotiating leverage for experienced ER nurses.

  • Community ED (>50K visits/year): $77,000-$125,000, high volume, diverse acuity; most accessible entry point for new ER RNs; strong demand for overtime and PRN coverage.
  • Freestanding Emergency Department: $79,000-$118,000, lower acuity but full ER scope; no overnight ICU boarding; increasingly staffed by travel nurses at premium rates.
  • Pediatric ED: $80,000-$130,000, children's hospital premium; ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) valued; lower volume than adult EDs but higher complexity per case.

CEN Certification Salary Premium

The CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) credential from BCEN adds $6,000-$12,000 annually at most major health systems. Requirements: 2 years ER RN experience, 1,750 hours in past 2 years in ED setting. Renewal: every 4 years (80 CE credits or retake exam).
