Is Alabama an NLC compact state?

Yes. Alabama joined the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) in 2016. The Alabama State Board of Nursing (ASBN) issues multi-state RN licenses to nurses whose primary state of residence is Alabama. If you already hold a multi-state license issued by another compact state, you can practice in Alabama without a separate AL license, the compact grants immediate authorization to practice in any compact member state when your home state is also a compact member.

Background check and fingerprinting

ASBN requires electronic fingerprinting through IdentoGO using the ASBN-specific service code listed on abn.alabama.gov. Checks run through both the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center (ACJIC) and the FBI National Criminal Background Check System. Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks after fingerprinting. Results are transmitted directly to ASBN. As with all state boards, proactively disclosing prior arrests or convictions, including expunged records in some jurisdictions, is safer than having them surface unexplained from the background check.

Endorsement timeline

Alabama endorsement typically processes in 4-6 weeks when all documents are submitted simultaneously. The most common delay is board-to-board paper verification for nurses coming from states not on Nursys. Continuing education requirements

Alabama requires 24 contact hours of CE per two-year renewal cycle. At least 1 of the 24 hours must be ASBN-approved content specifically addressing Alabama nursing rules and regulations, a distinctive requirement not universal to all compact states. The remaining 23 hours can be in any approved clinical, professional development, or management topic. CE must be completed before renewal submission and is subject to audit; retain certificates of completion for at least four years.
