Confirm compact privilege or endorsement need
Georgia is an NLC compact state. If you hold a compact RN license from another compact state and Georgia is not your primary state of residence, you may practice in GA under your home-state compact privilege. If Georgia will become your primary residence, you must obtain a Georgia RN license through endorsement.
Apply on the Georgia eLicense Online portal
Georgia professional licenses, including RN endorsements, are managed through the eLicense Online portal at sos.ga.gov. Create an account, select "Registered Nurse, Endorsement," and complete the application. Pay the endorsement fee (~$75; verify the current amount at sos.ga.gov before applying).
Authorize Nursys electronic license verification
Georgia participates in Nursys. In your eLicense application, authorize Nursys to release your license record to the Georgia Board of Nursing. If your home state is not on Nursys, request an official paper license verification from your state board and mail it to the Georgia Professional Licensing Board.
Complete GBI and FBI fingerprint background check
Georgia requires fingerprinting through the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and, for federal purposes, the FBI. Follow the fingerprinting instructions in your eLicense application. You will use the Georgia Applicant Processing Service (GAPS) at georgia.gov/gaps. Results transmit electronically to the licensing board.
Monitor your application status on eLicense
Track your application status on the eLicense portal. Complete applications with Nursys electronic verification and cleared GBI/FBI background check typically process in 4-8 weeks. When your license is issued, your license number appears in the public Georgia Composite Medical Board / Professional Licensing verification tool.
Understand multistate compact status
If Georgia is your primary state of residence, your Georgia RN license is a multistate compact license valid in all NLC compact states. Nurses residing in other compact states may work in Georgia using their home-state compact privilege without endorsing into Georgia.

Continuing education for renewal
Georgia RN licenses renew every two years. Renewal requires 30 contact hours of continuing education from approved providers. Georgia does not currently mandate specific topic areas within the 30 hours (verify current requirements at sos.ga.gov before renewal, as requirements may be updated by board rule). CE records must be retained for 4 years in case of audit.
Timeline expectations
Complete endorsement applications with Nursys electronic verification and cleared GBI/FBI background check typically process in 4-8 weeks. Paper verification from non-Nursys states adds 2-3 weeks. Georgia does not issue temporary permits for nurses pending endorsement, plan your application submission accordingly for your target start date.
