Is Maine an NLC compact state?
Yes. Maine joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2023. This is a recent change that significantly affects travel nurses and multi-state practitioners who previously needed a separate Maine license. If your primary state of residence is any other NLC compact state, your multi-state license now covers Maine practice. This makes Maine assignments far more accessible than they were before 2023.

Maine as a Travel Nursing Market
Maine has a significant travel nursing demand due to its rural geography and limited local nursing workforce pipeline. MaineHealth (Portland-based, the state's largest system) and Northern Light Health (Bangor-based) are the primary employers. Demand is strongest in ICU, ER, and med-surg specialties. Maine's compact entry in 2023 has increased assignment availability by making it easier for compact-licensed travel nurses to take Maine contracts without the previous separate-licensing delay.
