In brief

How to get your Michigan RN license in 2026. LARA BPL endorsement portal, NLC compact state, Michigan State Police background check, and 4-8 week timeline.

Steps at a glance

  1. Confirm compact privilege or endorsement need

Michigan is an NLC compact state. If you hold a compact RN license from another compact state and Michigan is not your primary residence, you may practice in MI under your home-state compact privilege. If Michigan will become your primary state of residence, you must obtain a Michigan RN license through endorsement.

  2. Apply through the Michigan Online licensing portal (LARA)

Michigan nursing licenses are managed by the Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL) under the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Apply online at michigan.gov/michiganonline, create an account, and select "Registered Nurse, Endorsement." Pay the endorsement fee (~$90; verify the current amount at michigan.gov/lara).

  3. Authorize Nursys electronic license verification

Michigan participates in Nursys. Authorize Nursys to release your current license record to Michigan BPL within your application. If your home state is not on Nursys, request paper verification from your state board and mail it to LARA in Lansing. Paper verification adds 2-3 weeks.

  4. Submit fingerprints for Michigan State Police and FBI background check

Michigan requires a criminal background check through the Michigan State Police (MSP) and FBI. Follow the fingerprinting instructions in your LARA application. Michigan uses approved fingerprint vendors (IdentoGO or similar). Results transmit electronically to LARA. The fingerprint fee is approximately $40-50.

  5. Monitor your application on the Michigan Online portal

Track your application status at michigan.gov/michiganonline. Complete applications with Nursys verification and cleared background check typically process in 4-8 weeks. Your license number appears in the public Michigan license verification tool at michigan.gov/lara when issued.

  6. Plan for CE at renewal

Michigan RN licenses renew every two years. Michigan requires continuing education hours per renewal cycle (verify the current hour requirement and any mandatory topics at michigan.gov/lara before renewing). Retain CE documentation for 4 years in case of audit.

  5. What we see at Ava Health

Michigan is a major Midwest healthcare market anchored by large Detroit-area systems including Henry Ford Health, Beaumont Health (now Corewell Health), Trinity Health Michigan, Detroit Medical Center, and the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. Grand Rapids, Flint, and Lansing also operate significant regional systems. The Michigan Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL), under the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), administers RN licensure at michigan.gov/lara.

Is Michigan an NLC compact state?

Yes. Michigan is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member. Michigan-licensed RNs with Michigan as their primary state of residence hold multistate compact licenses valid in all other NLC compact states. Nurses residing in other compact states may work in Michigan using their home-state compact privilege without a separate Michigan endorsement.

Endorsement fees (2026)

ItemFee
Endorsement application (Michigan Online / LARA)~$90
MSP + FBI fingerprinting (background check)~$40-50
Nursys electronic verification (if applicable)$30
Estimated total~$160-$170

Continuing education for renewal

Michigan RN licenses renew every two years. Michigan requires continuing education hours per renewal cycle; verify the current requirement and any mandatory topic designations at michigan.gov/lara before renewing, as CE requirements are established by board rule and may be updated. Retain all CE certificates for 4 years in case of a LARA audit.

Timeline expectations

Complete endorsement applications, Nursys verification received + Michigan State Police background check cleared, typically process in 4-8 weeks. Applications requiring paper verification from non-Nursys states add 2-3 weeks. Michigan does not issue temporary permits for nurses pending endorsement. Plan your application timing to make sure your license is active before your Michigan start date.

What we see at Ava Health

Michigan is an active market in our nursing pipeline, particularly for Detroit-metro ICU, OR, and cardiac nursing positions at Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health (the Beaumont+Spectrum merger). The University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor drives consistent demand for specialty and research nursing. Michigan's compact membership makes it an accessible target for Midwest travel nurses rotating between Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin assignments.
