South Carolina is an NLC compact state. If you hold a compact RN license from another compact state and South Carolina is not your primary residence, you may practice in SC under your home-state compact privilege. If South Carolina will become your primary state of residence, you must obtain a South Carolina RN license.
Apply on the LLR Online portal
South Carolina professional licenses are managed by the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR). Apply at llr.sc.gov, create an account, select "Registered Nurse, Endorsement," and complete the application. Pay the endorsement fee (~$75; verify at llr.sc.gov).
Authorize Nursys electronic license verification
South Carolina participates in Nursys. Authorize Nursys to release your current license record to SCBON within your LLR Online application. If your home state is not on Nursys, request paper verification and mail it to SCBON in Columbia.
Complete SLED and FBI fingerprint background check
South Carolina requires a criminal background check through the SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the FBI. Results transmit electronically to SCBON. The fingerprint fee is approximately $40-50.
