Verify eligibility and gather documents
Confirm you hold an active, unencumbered RN license in another U.S. state. Gather your current license certificate, official NCLEX pass letter or transcript, and government-issued ID. If originally licensed outside the U.S., additional credential evaluation steps apply through a BON-approved agency.
Submit endorsement application through Texas BON
Log in at nursing.texas.gov, create an account, and submit the online endorsement application. Pay the $186 endorsement fee by credit card. Most states participate in Nursys e-Notify, which allows Texas BON to verify your license electronically, authorize the release during the application.
Complete IdentoGO fingerprint background check
Texas requires electronic fingerprinting through IdentoGO (IDEMIA). Schedule an appointment at identogo.com using the Texas BON service code, pay the fingerprint fee (~$38.25), and attend your appointment. Results transmit directly to the Texas BON.
Request paper verification if not on Nursys
If your current state does not participate in Nursys, request an official license verification directly from your state board and have it mailed to Texas BON. This adds 1-3 weeks. Texas BON will not process your application until verification is received.
Monitor application status online
Check your application status at nursing.texas.gov. Most complete applications, electronic verification + fingerprinting cleared, are processed within 4-8 weeks. You may contact the BON after 30 days if no status update appears.
Understand your NLC compact status
Texas is an NLC compact state. Once your Texas license issues, it is a multistate license (if Texas is your state of primary residence), valid in all other compact states. Nurses whose primary residence is another compact state may practice in Texas under their home-state compact privilege without a separate Texas license.

Is Texas an NLC compact state?
Yes. Texas is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member and issues multistate licenses. If Texas is your primary state of residence and you hold a Texas RN license, you can practice in all other NLC compact states without obtaining a separate state license. Nurses licensed in other compact states who maintain residency there can work in Texas under their home-state compact privilege, no endorsement needed unless Texas becomes your permanent home.

Continuing education for renewal
Texas RN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Renewal requires 20 contact hours of continuing education, including 2 hours of Texas nursing jurisprudence education approved by the BON. CE records are self-reported; the BON conducts random audits. A $65 late renewal penalty applies if renewal is not completed by the deadline. Texas does not require a minimum number of clinical practice hours for renewal.
Timeline expectations
Complete applications with Nursys electronic verification and cleared fingerprinting typically process in 4-8 weeks. Applications requiring paper license verification or flagged for additional review (criminal history disclosures, prior board action in any state) can take 12-16 weeks. Texas BON publishes current processing time estimates on its website.
