Wound Care Nurse Salary 2026: CWON/CWS Certification, Settings & Pay
The average wound care nurse (WOC nurse) salary in 2026 is $80,000/year ($38.46/hour) nationally, with CWON-certified nurses at outpatient wound centers and specialty hospital programs earning $92,000-$108,000. Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) nursing is one of the fastest-growing nursing specialties due to the aging population, the rise of diabetes-related chronic wounds, and an increasing focus on hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI) prevention as a CMS reimbursement metric.

WOC Nursing Certifications & Pay Impact
- CWON (Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse): WOCNCB board certification covering wound, ostomy, AND continence. The master credential in this specialty. Adds 8-12% base salary; required for WOC specialist roles at Magnet hospitals. Exam prerequisite: RN license + WOCN Society accredited education program (typically a 6-week online/hybrid course, $2,500-$5,000).
- CWS (Certified Wound Specialist): ABWM certification. Physician- and nurse-eligible. Widely recognized in outpatient wound centers (Healogics, DHS). Adds 6-10% premium; preferred by many Diversified Healthcare wound programs over CWON for outpatient-only roles.
- CWCN (Certified Wound Care Nurse): Entry-level WOCNCB cert covering wounds only (not ostomy/continence). Good stepping stone; adds 4-6% and opens WOC program positions.
- CHRN (Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse): ABWM/NBDHMT certification for HBO wound programs. Adds 5-8% in hyperbaric-equipped wound centers.
Why WOC Nursing Pays More Than Base Floor Nursing
The CWON certification requires dedicated education (a WOCN-accredited program), a separate exam, and ongoing CE. Hospitals and wound centers value this for specific, quantifiable reasons:
- CMS never-events: Stage 3/4 hospital-acquired pressure injuries are non-reimbursable events. A credentialed WOC nurse directly reduces billing exposure, justifying salary premium over standard floor nursing
- Outpatient revenue: Wound centers bill on a per-visit, often bundled model. CWON nurses managing HBO and debridement procedures are direct revenue generators
- Vendor relationships: Advanced wound care product companies (Mölnlycke, Smith+Nephew, 3M) conduct in-service training through WOC nurses, adding value to the employer beyond direct patient care
