Step-by-step: New graduate RN license in Utah
Step 1: Verify eligibility and gather documents
You need a nursing degree from a DOPL-approved program, a valid Social Security number, and no disqualifying criminal history. Gather your nursing school transcript, a government-issued photo ID, and any criminal history documentation.
Step 2: Create your DOPL online account
Go to dopl.utah.gov and register for an online account. Utah processes all RN license applications electronically, paper applications are not the standard pathway.
Step 3: Submit the application and pay the fee
Select "Registered Nurse, Initial License by Examination," complete all sections, and pay the application fee online. Confirm current fee amounts on the DOPL website before applying.
Step 4: Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting
Utah requires a fingerprint-based background check through IdentoGO. After submitting your application, DOPL provides a service code. Visit any IdentoGO location in Utah with your service code and photo ID. Fingerprint results are sent directly to DOPL.

CE requirements for Utah RN renewal
Utah RNs must complete 30 contact hours of continuing education per 2-year renewal cycle. Requirements:
- CE providers must be recognized by a national accrediting body (ANCC, ACPE, Utah Nurses Association, or other DOPL-approved organizations).
- CE records must be retained for audit and may be reviewed by DOPL during renewal spot-checks.
