Confirm whether you need endorsement or compact privilege
Washington joined the NLC in January 2024. If you are licensed in another compact state and Washington is not your primary state of residence, you can practice in Washington under your home-state compact privilege, no separate Washington license is required. If Washington will become your primary residence, you must obtain a Washington license through endorsement.
Create a SecureAccess Washington account and access POLARIS
Washington NCQAC processes all nursing applications through the POLARIS online licensing portal. Navigate to doh.wa.gov, go to the Licensing section, and create or sign in to your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account. From the POLARIS dashboard, select "Apply for Endorsement" for Registered Nurse.
Submit the endorsement application and pay the fee
Complete the online application with your current license information, nursing education history, and employment background. Pay the application fee by credit card (approximately $90-125; verify the current amount at doh.wa.gov as fees are subject to legislative updates). Washington NCQAC charges no separate renewal fee for the initial license period.
Authorize Nursys electronic verification
Washington uses Nursys for electronic license verification from participating states. Within your POLARIS application, authorize Nursys to release your license record to Washington NCQAC. If your home state does not participate in Nursys, request a paper license verification directly from your state board and mail it to NCQAC.
Complete the WATCH and FBI background check
Washington requires a background check through the Washington State Patrol WATCH system. Complete the online fingerprint submission via the DOH background check portal. The WATCH fee is approximately $13.25; an FBI fingerprint check (~$16.50) may also be required. Results are transmitted electronically to NCQAC.
Monitor your application in POLARIS
Track your application status directly in the POLARIS portal. Complete applications with electronic Nursys verification and background check clearance typically process in 4-8 weeks. Once approved, your license number and expiration date appear in POLARIS and in the public DOH license lookup at doh.wa.gov.

Washington State is a major Pacific Northwest nursing market anchored by large health systems including UW Medicine, Providence Health, MultiCare, Swedish (now part of Providence), Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and Overlake Medical Center. The Washington Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission (NCQAC), part of the Washington State Department of Health (DOH), administers RN licensure under RCW 18.79.
Is Washington an NLC compact state?
Yes, as of January 19, 2024. Washington joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), meaning Washington-licensed nurses with Washington as their primary state of residence hold a multistate license valid in all other NLC compact states. Nurses licensed in other compact states who maintain residency there may practice in Washington using their home-state compact privilege without obtaining a Washington license, until they establish Washington as their primary residence.

Continuing education for renewal
Washington RN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the licensee's birth month in even-numbered years. Renewal requires attestation of continued competency and either 531 hours of professional nursing practice during the renewal period or 45 contact hours of approved continuing education. A combination of practice hours and CE is also accepted. There is no state-mandated topic requirement, but NCQAC may conduct audits and request documentation.
Timeline expectations
Complete endorsement applications with electronic Nursys verification and cleared WATCH background checks typically process in 4-8 weeks. Paper verification from a non-Nursys state adds 2-4 weeks. NCQAC publishes current processing time estimates on its website; during high-volume periods (spring and fall), timelines may extend.
